Agency, The

History

Location:
Ogden, IA
History:

The Agency originally started life as the Gobi Desert Canoe Club Band. Inspired by the Sgt. Pepper album and Ron's sense of humor, this name was used until a "serious" name was deemed necessary. Carl and Ron were the motivating force behind the bands inception. They both went through the process of learning guitar simultaneously; getting together on Sunday afternoons to trade licks and new techniques learned during the week. The name came about because the band was looking for a synonym for the word "organization" that sounded "different".

Camel

History

Location:
Boone, IA
History:

Camel began life around Spring of 1972 when Denny and Dave got together to do some song writing and general jamming. Denny lived just a block or so south of Dave so it was very convenient for this to take place. Dave was in between bands as was Denny after County Road had broken up in late 1971. He had started a record shop in Boone called Revolver Records during this period.

County Road

History

Location:
Rippey/Ogden/Boone, IA
History:

County Road, with members from Boone, Ogden and Rippey, was started in early Summer 1971 and was an experiment to mix acoustic and electric material in a band format ala Crosby, Stills & Nash. Denny was the driving factor behind this endeavor. This group brought back Ron and Alan with their former band mate, both of them having played in bands with Denny on previous–and separate– occasions. They had thought of calling the band Road since it was still deemed a good name (Road was the name of Denny's previous band).

Outta Town Players, The

History

Location:
Ogden/Beaver, IA
History:

The Outta Town Players were formed in the wake of Ron and Brian’s departure from Road. The idea was to have a band that could do a variety of things in a variety of ways. Simply said, they wanted to do a mix of acoustic and electric material coupled with simple percussion.

Memories, Quotes and Lore

Memories:

At the battle of the bands dance that was held over Christmas vacation at Ogden High Ron was not with the group that night. Ron’s family was going to California during Christmas vacation that year. He was not going to be allowed to stay home so that he could play the dance. Denny and Ron concocted a fake telephone call that would be from Ron in California to Denny. In the course of the call Ron was going to perform a song supposedly over the telephone so Denny could tape it and play it that night at the dance. What happened in actuality was Denny and Ron got together well ahead of time and recorded the Beatles tune “All My Loving” to Denny’s reel to reel tape recorder. Only those in the band knew about it. At one point during the set at the dance–with Ron’s guitar and amp on the stage along with two purple candles which were lit very ceremoniously–the tape was played. Although they did not win the battle of the bands competition that evening, the supposed phone call brought down the house. Phil Dorner had brought his tape recorder to the dance to record portions of each of the three bands playing that night. He happened to record this part of Road’s set on tape. The entire gym was quiet as the tape played-you could not hear anyone talking at all. When the tape ended there was an explosion of applause.
